Review: 17 Turkish Doner Kebab @ Sim Lim Square

I dislike going to Sim Lim Square. I think that place is a filthy scam central that often leads to disappointment. However, it still does provide one of the quickest services you can get in Singapore when it comes to electronics. So when we needed to replace the battery of our very old Sonos speaker which required some soldering, off we went to Sim Lim Square.

We came during lunch time, so while waiting for the new batteries to me soldered back, we started looking up our options… and this one caught our eyes: 17 Turkish Doner Kebab. Technically, it’s not at Sim Lim – it’s actually next door at Broadway Food Center, but you can access the food center straight from Sim Lim.

And that’s one of the main draws of 17 Turkish Doner Kebab. Typically, when you go to a food center in Singapore, you can expect the usual local fare – chicken rice, noodle dishes, and maybe some char siew rice stall or a Malay rendang stall. You wouldn’t expect to find a Turkish food in a food center!

Despite locating Broadway Food Center easily via the basement level of Sim Lim Square, we had difficulties locating the 17 Turkish Doner Kebab stall itself. Turns out, it was hidden behind a pillar towards the end of the food center.

Quick glance at the menu reveals that their prices are slightly higher than a typical food center meal, but still lower than if you had gone to a Turkish restaurant elsewhere in Singapore! They have a Kebab menu with a choice of chicken, beef or mix for the meat.

Then on the other side, they had a vegetarian menu.

I went with the mix kebab salad with fries at $11.30. Here’s how it looks like:

My husband ordered Chicken kebab tombik ($7.00), which looked like a sandwich:

And they have dessert too! I couldn’t resist Baklava, 3 pieces for $9.00. They also have Kunafeh, which was one of my favorite dessert EVER, but there is a 15 minute wait time for it and we were sort of in a rush so I’ll just have to come for it some other time.

How was the food? Well, it was really delicious! I felt like we had found one of the hidden gems in Singapore. The kebab meat were tender, juice and very flavorful. I love the white sauce that was served with it. The Baklava was great too, though I think it was a little too pricey.

I think 17 Turkish Doner Kebab will be my go-to choice whenever I’m in Sim Lim area.
